Overview
Bookmark RAG is designed with privacy as a core principle. Unlike cloud-based services, all data processing happens locally on your Mac. This privacy policy explains how we handle your information.
What Data We Collect
Locally Stored Data
- Bookmarks: Your imported bookmark HTML files and their metadata
- Scraped Content: Web page content extracted from your bookmarks
- AI Embeddings: Vector representations of your bookmark content for search
- Screenshots: Optional thumbnail images of bookmarked pages
- License Information: Your license key and email (if Pro version)
✅ All of this data stays on your Mac. It is never transmitted to our servers or any third party.
Analytics & Telemetry
We do not collect any analytics or telemetry data. The app does not "phone home," track usage, or send any data about how you use the application.
License Validation
When you activate a Pro license, your license key and email are sent to LemonSqueezy (our payment processor) to verify validity. This is the only network request made for licensing purposes. LemonSqueezy's privacy policy applies to this data: https://www.lemonsqueezy.com/privacy
Where Your Data Is Stored
All application data is stored in the following location on your Mac:
~/Library/Application Support/com.bookmark-rag.app/
This includes:
- Vector database (LanceDB)
- Scrape cache
- Screenshot thumbnails
- Application preferences
💡 Tip: You can delete all data by using the "Clear Database" button in the app, or by manually deleting the directory above.
AI & Machine Learning
Bookmark RAG uses local AI models running on your Mac via Ollama:
- Meta Llama 3.1 for natural language understanding and question answering
- nomic-embed-text for creating searchable embeddings
All AI processing happens locally. Your bookmarks and queries are never sent to external AI services like OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google.
Web Scraping & Authenticated Content
When you import bookmarks, Bookmark RAG scrapes the content of those pages to make them searchable.
For login-protected content:
- The app can open an authenticated browser session where you log in to services (Google, Notion, etc.)
- Your login credentials are entered by you directly in the browser and are never stored by Bookmark RAG
- Browser cookies/sessions are stored locally by Playwright (the browser automation library)
- These sessions are only used to access bookmarks you've explicitly imported
⚠️ Important: By using the authenticated scraping feature, you are responsible for ensuring compliance with the Terms of Service of the websites you scrape. Only scrape content you have permission to access.
Third-Party Services
Bookmark RAG interacts with the following third-party services:
- LemonSqueezy: Payment processing and license validation (when activating Pro)
- Ollama: Local AI runtime (runs on your Mac, no external communication)
- Websites you bookmark: When scraping content, HTTP requests are made to those websites
We do not share your data with any third parties for advertising, analytics, or other purposes.
Your Rights
Because all data is stored locally on your Mac, you have complete control:
- Access: All data is in standard formats in your Application Support folder
- Deletion: Use the "Clear Database" button or delete the app data folder
- Portability: Export your bookmarks as HTML at any time
- Control: No account, no cloud sync, no external dependencies
Security
We take the following measures to protect your data:
- All data stored in macOS Application Support with standard file permissions
- License validation uses HTTPS encryption
- No cloud storage or remote backup of your bookmarks
- App runs in macOS sandbox with restricted system access
Your Mac's security is your data's security. Use FileVault encryption and regular backups to protect your bookmark data.
Children's Privacy
Bookmark RAG is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect any personal information from children. Since all data is local, there is no collection or transmission of user data regardless of age.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of any changes by updating the "Last updated" date at the top of this page. Continued use of Bookmark RAG after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
